Directional Terms


Superior- Toward the upper part of the body or the head end
Inferior- Away from the head end or below
Ventral- toward the front of the body
Dorsal- toward the backside of the body
Medial- toward the midline of the body
Lateral- away from the midline of the body
Intermediate- between a more medial and more lateral structure
Proximate- close to the origin of the body
Distal- farther from the origin of the body
Superficial- toward of at the body surface
Deep- away from the body surface
